Color deficiencies are not rare in men with inherited deficiencies as common as 8% and less than 5% of the total population. These red – green type deficiencies are called “Protan” and “Deutan” and are genetic traits.
Acquired deficiencies, “Tritan” blue – type, are historically considered rare, not screened for at all with “Ishihara” color tests, and may be more common than widely thought. Tritan deficiencies can occur with cataracts and as side effects of more than 300 common prescription medications as well as abused drugs and alcohol.

Pseudo Isochromatic Plates, or “PIP” tests, have been the backbone of color vision testing since Dr. Ishihara’s KONAN_15breakthrough products in the early 20th century. More than a decade ago, Dr. Terrace Waggoner developed his enhanced PIP strategy using six confusion colors.
The first application for the Waggoner strategy was a pediatric test “Color Vision Testing Made Easy” or “CVTME”. Considered the gold standard for pediatric assessment of colorblindness, CVTME is used in over 40 countries and has validated also for illiterates at the US Special Olympics.
This test is used in a broad range of settings: pediatrics, eye physicians, school nurses, and many other disciplines of health care, in any language, world-wide. This easy to administer test features both hidden and non-hidden shapes that allow for successful answers while carefully discovering un-visualized targets. Brilliantly simple to take, easy to score and just plain fun for children. CVTME is now available as the Pediatric 15 of the ColorDx family of color vision testing products and includes on-line forms, scoring and training materials.
